The first thing ex-Ohio State quarterback turned ESPN talking head Kirk Herbstreit did when he fired up a new Twitter account last month was announce his family's move from Columbus to Nashville, ostensibly because he was tired of a minority of "relentless" Buckeye fans forcing him to defend his "love and devotion" to the alma mater. Less than two months later, the Twitter account is gone, too ?because he's tired of a minority of relentless Buckeye fans forcing him to defend his love and devotion to the alma mater:
In an interview with WGFX 104.5 The Zone in his new hometown of Nashville on Thursday, Herbstreit said it was "asinine" he had to defend his allegiance to the Buckeyes. Herbstreit has questioned how coach Jim Tressel can keep his job amid allegations of lying to the NCAA."I just felt it wasn't for me as I already have sufficient ways to communicate my thoughts on college football," Herbstreit said in a statement through ESPN on Friday.
Herbstreit said in the radio interview he wouldn't interact with fans through social media "for a while." His Twitter account has been taken down.
The haters were there from start (for a while, Herbstreit seemed to relish re-tweeting their insults to his own followers), but the breaking point came earlier this week, when Herbie seemed to call for Ohio State to fire coach Jim Tressel in the wake of a formal notice of allegations from the NCAA alleging Tressel covered up violations by multiple Buckeye players for the entire 2010 season and lied to Ohio State and the NCAA in the process. A fair, informed response by a guy paid for an informed opinion, perhaps, but obviously not one that meets with consensus within the tribe.
Herbstreit is clearly (and unapologetically) a Buckeye for life, even he didn't beat Michigan there. But if this bout of thin skin lasts long enough to spare America the semiannual visit from the bawling spawn of Herbstreit the next time the GameDay set visits Columbus, it will all be for the best.
