Hey sports fans! Just in case top running back prospect Barry Sanders Jr. wasn't making you feel quite decrepit enough, the 2012 recruiting class is also introducing the world to one Trey Griffey ? yes, that Griffey, latest of the venerable baseball bloodline that produced his grandfather, three-time All-Star Ken Griffey, his father, soon-to-be Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., and the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card. But Trey's not here to talk about the past:
This being the Internet, you can find unconfirmed accounts that claim then-Seattle Mariners manager Woody Woodward sent Griffey a contract dated "2012" with Trey's name on it the day Trey (as in "The Third") was born in 1994, and ESPN's Peter Gammons actually did tab 11-year-old Trey as the first pick in the 2012 MLB draft a few years back. The football scouts have been somewhat less impressed: Griffey's only Division I offer to date is from Florida International, though a few heavier hitters seem to have shown some serious interest, and he hopes a transfer to a more high-profile program ?Orlando's Dr. Phillips, which produced seven Division I signees in the 2011 class and is headlined this fall by a future D-I quarterback, Nick Patti ?will bring more, better offers. The wide receiver portions of his junior highlight reel are nothing to sneeze at.
And if all else fails, he can always check to see if his dad kept that Mariners contract in a drawer somewhere.
