The Importance of Play

Rory McKernan of CrossFit HQ joins Matt and Cherie Chan of CrossFit Verve at the Highlands Bowl in Aspen, Colo.

“We really try to kind of employ the tactics that CrossFit is so that you can live your life better,” Matt says, showing how he takes to heart a fundamental CrossFit recommendation from World-Class Fitness in 100 Words: “Regularly learn and play new sports.”

For Matt, skiing is a form of play and an essential part of his training. In addition to being a stress reliever and fresh change from the gym routine, he says it’s a chance to “apply my fitness and have fun doing it.”

“The reason that we all started doing this is because we wanted to have a level of fitness so that we were capable of things,” Matt says. “I think it’s always important to go back to those things that you wanted the level of fitness for so that you could really enjoy your life. And life is not just training.”

Cherie says that Matt taught her to make time for play.

“You have to put some things down that are going to fall over, and that’s OK. You have to let that go and go have fun.”
