Kansas coordinator Carl Torbush retires after cancer diagnosis

Kansas announced today that cornerbacks coach Vic Shealy has been named the team's new defensive coordinator after former coordinator Carl Torbush retired because of health reasons.

Torbush has been diagnosed with low-grade prostate cancer and has opted to end his 35-year coaching career to focus on treatment. Torbush will have surgery soon and is expected to make a full recovery.

"Carl has truly exemplified what a football coach should be throughout his career," coach Turner Gill said during a Tuesday press conference. "We want to thank him for his great spirit, knowledge of the game and loyalty to college football. He will be missed by our staff, our student-athletes, the entire KU nation and the college football family across the nation."

Defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt will serve as co-defensive coordinator alongside Sealy.

Torbush has been a head coach at Louisiana Tech (1987) and North Carolina (1998-2000) and he's been a defensive coordinator at Mississippi, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas A&M and Mississippi State. Torbush was entering his second season with the Jayhawks.
