Can you pass the NCAA’s annual coaches certification exam?

If any college basketball players complain about how tough their spring semester final exams were this year, they should know that their coaches have an equally challenging test they must pass this month.

The NCAA requires every head coach and assistant to take a recruiting certification test each summer that consists of 30 multiple choice or true-false questions related to NCAA amateurism and recruiting rules. Coaches who don't get at least 80 percent of the questions right must wait 30 days to take the test again in order to earn the right to recruit off-campus.

The actual test coaches take this year is not released to the public, but the NCAA posted a sample exam on its website. And while the true-false or multiple choice format is a favorite of any savvy student looking for an easy "A," a few of the questions are far more difficult than those typically found on the average history or sociology exam. For example:

? Which of the following is TRUE regarding institutional note cards?

A) A single photo may be printed on the outside.
B) The institution`s name, head coach`s name, address and telephone number may be printed on the outside.
C) It cannot include any pre-printed information on the inside.
D) It may be 11 x 14 inches when opened in full.

Answer: C)

? During the month of May it is permissible for an institution's basketball coach to lecture at a noninstitutional (i.e., privately owned) basketball camp that is operated under restrictions applicable to institutional camps.

A) True.
B) False.

Answer: B)

? An OPEN EVENT conducted by or held on the campus of an institution is not considered a tryout provided which of the following?

A) The event is not classified by age group or grade level.
B) Selection of participants is limited ONLY by number, geographical area and/or some objective standard of performance.
C) All participants must be amateurs.
D) Both a and b.

Answer: D)

I consider myself to be fairly well-versed on the NCAA rulebook pertaining to basketball. I'd have gotten only one of those three right.

The test is detailed enough that even a rules-savvy coach like Portland's Eric Reveno admits he didn't get a perfect score this year. Tweeted Reveno on Wednesday morning: "I submit attached photo for public record. I passed the recruiting exam. Missed the 1 on postcards with school logo. http://t.co/CKcG6Ej."
