Here's a novel way to momentarily distract from the looming scandal threatening to engulf your program: Introduce some rocking military-themed helmets for spring practice. Ohio State players are wearing the camo-print lids through the remaining practices and the spring game on April 23, after which all but 25 are scheduled to be painted the traditional silver for the regular season. (The helmets, not Ohio State players.) The remaining 25 will be signed by coach Jim Tressel ? who can still attract a crowd of adoring autograph seekers despite his recent troubles ?�and sold for $1,000 apiece to benefit the Ohio National Guard Family Readiness and Warrior Support Program, LiFE (Learning in Fitness & Education) through Sports Program, and �the Ruth and Jesse Owens Scholars Fund.
The Buckeyes are no strangers to alternate unis with a military motif, but they're second to the punch on this particular innovation. Army broke out the camouflage helmets as part of an all-camo look against the Virginia Military Institute last October. If you've got to be No. 2 on this front, I suppose you can do a lot worse.
