Florida announced Tuesday that it has added a pair of former head coaches to fill its basketball staff.
Former Arkansas head coach and Florida assistant John Pelphrey and former St. Johns coach Norm Roberts will take the place of Larry Shyatt, who became the head coach at Wyoming, and Richard Pitino and Rob Lanier, who head coach Billy Donovan announced were heading to Louisville and Texas respectively.
The addition of both Pelphrey and Roberts not only gives Florida some head coaching experience, it also give the Gators a pair of good recruiters. Before Pelphrey was fired at Arkansas, he had put together one of the nation's top incoming classes for 2011. Roberts has deep roots in the New York area, similar to head coach Billy Donovan.
While these hires are a coup for Florida, Pelphrey has to be a little disappointed. He was an assistant with Florida from 1996-2002 and then became the head coach at South Alabama. He turned that job into a head coaching stint with Arkansas in 2007. However, Pelphrey was just 69-60 during his time with the Razorbacks and had just one NCAA appearance.
But if Pelphrey and Roberts want to get back into head coaching, Florida is a good place to start and Donovan is a good advocate to have.
