UPDATE, 10:02 a.m. ET: Matti's body wasrecovered by investigators Tuesdaymorning.
Authorities from multiple local and state agencies searched throughout the day Monday for Purdue running back Sean Matti, who went missing Sunday night in Western Indiana. Matti, 22, was last seen around 5 p.m. on July 3 while swimming with friends near a home on Lake Freeman, a little more than 20 miles northeast of Purdue's campus.
Members of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources began the search for Matti on foot Sunday night, and continued Monday with divers, sonar, search dogs and a fixed-wing airplane from the Indiana State Police, without success. He reportedly had been drinking when he disappeared, according to witnesses, and had been missing for more than six hours before friends called the sheriff's department around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night.
Matti is a fifth-year senior from Shoreview, Minn., who walked on at Purdue in 2007 and has yet to see the field going into his final season of eligibility. A team spokesman described him to the Lafayette Journal and Courier as "a good program guy" who contributed on the scout team and is "well-liked by his teammates."
