There's only one logical conclusion to draw after watching notoriously understated Trent Johnson come out of his shell in the video below: Bowling brings out the LSU coach's personality.
Twice Johnson makes a strike symbol with his arms and gets unusually fired up after rolling a basketball down the hallway outside his office and toppling the 10 iced tea bottles lined up like bowling pins at the other end. Those strikes were practice for last Friday's head-to-head challenge between Johnson and LSU sports information director Kent Lowe, a longtime avid bowling enthusiast.
Johnson had never bowled until the day before the event and Lowe had been bowling since he was in grade school, so it's hardly surprising that the sports information director earned bragging rights over the basketball coach. Baton Rouge NBC affiliate WVLA-TV has footage of the showdown, which the sign outside Circle Bowl Action Alley appropriately dubbed Trent vs. Kent I.
"He's certainly got the potential to be a pretty good bowler with his form," Lowe told the TV station. "I don't know that I want to make this too often an event because he's going to get good and I'm going to be in trouble."
Opportunities to relax like this have been few and far between lately for Johnson, whose LSU team has endured back-to-back 20-loss seasons and has won just 5 of 32 SEC games the last two years. Nonetheless, the Tigers went undefeated on a recent exhibition tour in Italy and they have Johnson's best recruiting class set to arrive, so maybe there's reason for the coach to finally let loose a little.
