The most memorable dunk from Oregon State's two-week service trip to Macedonia resulted in a shattered backboard, a blood-spattered court and a trip to the emergency room.
Even though Roberto Nelson had been warned that the vintage backboards in Macedonia's capital city often weren't shatter-proof, the Oregon State sophomore couldn't resist going for a highlight-worthy slam with his team comfortably ahead of a local club team. The outcome was an off-glass alley-oop dunk that snapped the rim and shattered the glass, a spectacular yet scary sight.
So much blood streamed down Nelson's face and left arm that he required 20 stitches to close the wounds. Nonetheless, he was in good enough spirits to allow Beavers without Borders to film him at the hospital and then interview him afterward.
"I don't know how the freaking rim broke," Nelson said. "It broke on the way up. I barely touched it and the whole thing just popped. I don't know, maybe I'm strong. Maybe I can say I'm strong because I broke a rim. Not a Fisher Price one. It's just crazy, man."
Nelson's dunk may have come in a pickup game on foreign soil, but it left his teammates buzzing nearly as much as Jared Cunningham's infamous one-handed follow slam against Arizona last season. Teammate Kevin McShane blogged about the dunk, calling it one of his favorite stories from the trip.
"The other teams coach had warned us not to dunk but there Joe, Berto, and myself and a few of the other teams players had been dunking all game so we didn't think anything of it," wrote McShane. "But somehow he hit the right spot and the glass rained down. We have video and photos of the bucket list item and will be posted ASAP. It was an incredible feat that every basketball player in the world dreams of doing, big ups to my man Berto!"
