On April 30, CrossFit Native in Oklahoma City, Okla., held a very special WOD: Jack, part of The Disposable Heroes Project. CrossFitters from around the area gathered to pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces by performing the challenging Hero workout.
In Part 1, the family of Army Staff Sgt. Jack M. Martin III, tell his story and share some of his experiences with CrossFit.
“He had a great sense of humor, he loved CrossFit, he loved being a medic, he loved his team, and he really felt like they were making a difference in the world, and I feel like he accomplished a lot for living just 26 years,” says his sister.
Learning the story behind the workout motivates the CrossFitters to push harder. They express their gratitude for these heroes.
“I get to run a gym because of the protection that they’ve provided,” says Uwem Ekpenyong, owner of Ground Zero CrossFit.
In Part 2, the hero WOD Jack is held in honor of Martin’s ultimate sacrifice for his country.
“It’s got to be something that, you know, makes you question yourself. It’s got to be something that you have to dig down deep,” says Brad McKee, the coordinator of the Disposable Heroes Project. “It makes you realize you can do things you probably couldn’t do before.”
Finally, McKee explains how affiliates can get involved and host their own WOD.
