Louisville Tops Syracuse Again Despite Late Orange Rally

Kyle Kuric continued his spirited play and No. 16 Louisville (19-6, 8-4 in the Big East) kept its dominance over No. 12 Syracuse (20-6, 7-6) intact with a 73-69 win Saturday. The Cards have now won seven straight over Jim Boeheim and the Orange, a streak dating back to the 2006-07 season.

Louisville jumped out to a 20-point second half lead, but then went cold. Syracuse closed the game on a 32-16 run, cutting the lead to three with just over a minute to play. The Cards were able to hit just enough free throws, and the Orange couldn't close the deal.

Kuric led Louisville with 23 points, just three nights after scoring 28 against Notre Dame. Preston Knowles added 22 for the Cards, and Terrence Jennings had another solid game, scoring 13 points and grabbing seven boards.

Rakeem Buckles got the start after missing 11 games due to injury, but he was largely ineffective, scoring only two points, though he did have six rebounds.

Brandon Triche led Syracuse with 21 points, and Scoop Jardine added 20 for the Orange who have now lost six of their last eight.

How It Was Won: Shooting. The Cards are the best shooting team in the Big East, so the Syracuse zone wasn't very effective. Louisville made 13 3-pointers and created a deficit that the Orange couldn't overcome. It's surprising that Kuric again had a huge game, as his coming out party occurred last year against Syracuse when he had 22 points. This game turned out to be very similar, as Kuric often fount himself getting open looks.

Where to From Here: Louisville now heads to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats, and Syracuse will look to get rolling with two definitely winnable home games against West Virginia and Rutgers.
