Brett Favre's record run ? and possibly career ? ends as Vikings lose to Giants

? Injury prevents quarterback making 298th straight start
? Minnesota lose 21-3 to New York as their play-off hopes end

Brett Favre's NFL-record streak of 297 straight starts ended yesterday and his replacement struggled as the Minnesota Vikings lost 21-3 to the New York Giants.

A shoulder injury and subsequent numbness in his throwing hand forced the 41-year-old Favre to miss a start for the first time since 1992. That was not the only unfamiliar note for the Vikings, who were forced to play the 'home' game in Detroit because the Metrodome's roof collapsed under heavy snow on Sunday.

The Giants took full advantage; Brandon Jacobs ran for a go-ahead touchdown midway through the second quarter, Eli Manning threw a lead-padding touchdown just before halftime and Ahmad Bradshaw added a 48-yard run. New York's defense sacked replacement quarterback Tarvaris Jackson four times, knocking him out of the game late in the third period and again in the final seconds.

New York (9-4) moved back into a first-place tie with Philadelphia in the NFC East. Minnesota, who went to the NFC title game last January, (5-8) were eliminated from the play-off race.

The game drew an announced crowd of 45,910 ? there seemed to be at least 10,000 more people in the 65,000-capacity stadium late in the first half ? and some fans made the trek to see Favre. Even though most got in for free, and Favre was present ? often tutoring Jackson from the sidelines ? the Vikings fans left disappointed.

Whether the 41-year-old Favre plays again for Minnesota in his 20th NFL season is uncertain. It appears his third return from a brief retirement will be the end ? and he might not finish the schedule. "[There's] relief in one sense. It's probably been long overdue," Favre said. "I won't play again if I can't feel my hand. It's been a great run. I'm proud of it."

Tiger Woods posted on his Twitter account: "Such a privilege to have seen one of the greatest accomplishments in sports history. Hats off to Brett."

In Houston, Baltimore blew another fourth-quarter lead, but salvaged an overtime 34-28 win over Houston. The overtime score came when Josh Wilson intercepted Matt Schaub's pass and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown. The Ravens (9-4) stayed one game behind Pittsburgh in the AFC North despite surrendering a 28-7 lead.
