Former Florida Star Andrew Moten Returns Home to Help Youth

Filed under:

QUINCY, Fla. -- It's not so much selective memory as it is a generation gap.

Andrew Moten, now 44 years old, is still asked about his playing days at the University of Florida, where he teamed up with Vernon Maxwell to form the highly potent and entertaining "M&M" backcourt for coach Norm Sloan.

"People do bring it up, but it's usually by those in their mid-40s," Moten said, chuckling.

You remember the late 1980s, don't you?

Moten and Maxwell headlined a UF team that, in 1987, was described by Vanderbilt coach C.M. Newton as a "team without a weakness." That was the first UF team to make the NCAA tournament, where it reached the Sweet 16 but tumbled to No. 2 Syracuse, 87-81.

Moten, a two-time team captain, still ranks among UF's all-time career leaders in double-digit scoring games (106, first), minutes played (3,930, second), scoring (1,930, second), field goals attempted (1,572, second) and field goals made (711, third).

Moten last chatted with Maxwell, who was residing in Charlotte, N.C., about a year ago, and, of course, Moten still keeps a close eye on the Gators.
