The Spartans may not have been bullied as badly in the post as they were against the Orangemen, but equally uncharacteristic defensive lapses and silly, silly turnovers doomed them Wednesday night in East Lansing where they fell to Texas, 67-55. It was their first non-conference home loss since 2003, when they lost to Duke.
No. 12 Michigan State (8-4) simply could not stop spinning its wheels. Even when the Spartans threatened to slice into the Texas lead -- which reached 16 at its peak -- they could not get big shot to fall. That, or they would lose the ball due to abject carelessness or as the result aggressive Longhorn defense.
Scoring was at a premium for much of the night, as both teams struggled with their offense. No. 18 Texas (10-2) was led by Jordan Hamilton with 21 points and Tristan Thompson with 17 points and 12 boards. Draymond Green, MSU's major presence in the post, fouled out with only four points.
